A “Take, Eat” Serving Reflection

Starting a new year often brings fresh hopes and resolutions. Yet, sometimes, it also brings unexpected challenges, like catching a cold right at the beginning of January. This was the case for Karen and me, as well as our daughter Lindsey, who visited and brought along a cold. To protect our community and guests, I decided to stay home from serving at the January 3rd Take, Eat event. While resting, my thoughts turned to those who face far greater challenges every day—our neighbors who are homeless, hungry, and living in the St Vincent de Paul shelter on Apple Street.

The St Vincent de Paul shelter provides a vital refuge for many people in our community. On this day, thanks to the dedication of my Christ Church neighbors—Karla M., Dick M., Penny N., Joy W., and Linda S.—88 guests received a nutritious lunch. These neighbors answered the call to “won’t you be my neighbor?” and through their service, they made it “another good day in this neighborhood.”

This phrase, inspired by the beloved children’s television show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, captures a spirit of kindness and community. Fred Rogers taught us that every person has value and that simple acts of neighborliness can create a positive, welcoming environment. Serving others is more than just a task; it is a way to live out our faith and discipleship.

Community service is a powerful expression of love for God, neighbor, and self. It reflects the core of what it means to follow Jesus. When we serve, we build connections that strengthen the fabric of our neighborhood.

The simple question “Would you be mine?” from the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood song is an invitation to connection. Saying “yes” means opening your heart and hands to others. It means recognizing that every person deserves respect, dignity, and care.

Our neighbors at the St Vincent de Paul shelter experienced this firsthand. The lunch served by our Christ Church friends was more than food; it was a message of hope and belonging. It showed that someone cares that they are part of a community.

The new year may have started with a cold for some of us, but it also began with a strong reminder of what truly matters: caring for one another. Through community service, we create days filled with hope, kindness, and connection. It is a beautiful day in this neighborhood when neighbors come together to serve and support each other.
